furniture stripping?
I want to strip some old library tables and chairs
( at least 40 years) How will I know if there is lead
in the paint and stained finish? I am aware of the
hazzards in taking off lead and the tools will be different.
Lead has not been used in consumer usable paint products in at least 40 years. Clear coat varnish, Lacquer, and shelac does not have lead in it’s composition. If your furniture is painted with a pigmitted paint product, most paint will require a paste or semi-paste stripper. There are no “special tools” required to strip varnish or paint from furniture. Follow the instructions on the can of stripper, clean up the residue following the instructions offered on the can of stripper. I recommend that when water is used to clean up after stripping, that the piece of furniture be dried with rags, to remove residue, then, wash with clean lacquer thinner to ensure that all flakes of old paint, and waxes are removed. Allow the piece of furniture to dry at least overnight, to ensure that the stripper compound, and excessive water or thinner has evaporated prior to attempting to sand, stain, or apply final clear coat or paint product. Dispose of all “old paint” residue as directed on the stripper can.
