Ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid or EDTA chelation Methal, and binds heavy metals very well. It has a greater affinity for lead than for Ca, making it an effective detoxifier for lead poisoning. The main reason salt is used (and is often sodium salt) is to make more soluble in EDTA.
