American Impressionism. Part 3

WALKER G. BUCKNER, JR.

Walker G. Buckner, Jr., earned degrees in law and business before beginning his study of art in 1977 at New York City’s Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. He is now a full-time professional artist, maintaining studios in Boston and Sheffield, Massachusetts.

Feeling a bit uncomfortable about describing his technique as he worked at Weir Farm, Buckner said, “It’s hard to say very much about painting. The expression of painting is a communication without language. It should do its work without a lot of chatter. The important thing in looking at paintings is to be open so the unexpected and unfamiliar aren’t shut out. It sometimes takes a long time to see what’s happening in a picture.”

Despite his words of caution, Buckner offered some insightful comments about his concerns as an artist: “Obviously, over time a painter acquires ways of solving problems. However, it also seems important to keep the process open, subject to accident and discovery. For me, the worst thing is to have a set way of going about it.

“I know I respond to light,” he continued. “I’m concerned with the way outdoor light lands on objects, the way shadow shapes are formed, the way color sits inside shadows. Sunlight seems to hold objects in place, to slow time down, extend the moment; it gives objects a solidity.

“I try to abstract the subject into its strongest forms,” Buckner went on to say. “Although I’m painting actual objects (chairs, boats, etc.), the painting process is one of transforming them. I think the pictures should be about paint, about light and shadow, about form and color. They’re not about the narrative of the subject. I like having a color on the surface when I start to paint. I like a gritty, lively, rough surface of brushstrokes. I like pushing the paint around. If the image is weak, I like to let it dry and then attack it fresh, not fix it. I like to drag wet paint over dry paint. I sometimes let marks on earlier layers show through, sometimes obliterate them.”

Buckner and Peggy Root (another Weir Farm outing participant) are the parents of small children and, for health reasons, have gotten into the habit of wearing disposable vinyl gloves while painting. At the farm, Buckner used both rough- and smooth-surfaced canvases primed with lead white oil paint. He worked with a combination of oils and alkyds, sometimes using Liquin alkyd medium to speed up their drying time.

“I’ve noticed that each of my paintings seems to have a kind of color harmony particular to it,” the artist observed. “This seems to be important to me. The color relationships are something I feel. I have no conscious rules.”

THOMAS S. BUECHNER

The cover story on Thomas S. Buechner that appeared in the October 1992 issue of American Artist gave a detailed description of the artist’s palette of fast-drying alkyd colors and the lightweight Multimedia Art-board on which he paints. He brought those supplies with him to Weir Farm in the minivan that often serves as his mobile studio. On the chilly first morning of the outing, Buechner was found standing under the rear hatch door of the van, listening to opera music through the car stereo, drinking coffee from a thermos, holding a brush in a hand covered with a fingerless glove, and painting a view of the Weir studio.

He uses the resin-based alkyd paints because they dry more quickly than oils and become impervious to solvents once they are dry. These characteristics are a real advantage for an artist who wants to avoid the muddy colors that can develop when applying layers of slow-drying oils. In addition, alkyds make it easier for Buechner to pack up paintings and travel to new locations; an alkyd painting normally dries completely within twenty-four hours while an oil painting can remain wet for days.

As the former director of both The Brooklyn Museum in New York City and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, Buechner is well informed about landscape painting. He offered these comments about the experience of painting at Weir Farm:

“Being interested in all kinds of techniques, I originally saw this outing as a chance to leave my own predilection for strong light and shade to investigate Weir’s late, pale palette. But it was no use. This strange place, so long an artist’s place, is a haunting anachronism. The stone walls, once laboriously built to enclose, no longer have gates; the entrance to the carriage house is blocked by a tree, and another tree prevents light from entering the studio window. These subjects seemed so poignant I found myself abandoning a deliberate technical approach and simply trying to convey the passage of time as I saw it here.”

GERARD DOUDERA

Gerard Doudera is the first painter to have been designated a visiting artist at Weir Farm (photographer Gretchen Garner was the 1991-1992 visiting artist). As such, he has been able to use the facilities there while painting the landscape.

Doudera, a professor emeritus of art at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, is well known throughout New England for his large paintings of ponds, wooded fields, and figures. “He seems to revel in the seductive power of nature which he presents to us like a delectable feast,” wrote art historian Joyce Brodsky in the catalog for a 1990 retrospective exhibition of Doudera’s work at the university’s William Benton Museum of Art. “Doudera’s strength lies in his refusal to be sentimental about the natural world, but to see it as that source of nourishment that feeds the sensuous parts of our nature.”

During the Weir Farm outing, the artist said he often works on large canvases when painting outdoors because he “likes being surrounded by canvas” and because he “finds it easier to develop a sense of deep space in a painting that’s large.” But the large scale forces him to take steps to keep the canvas from becoming a sail that carries his painting supplies away in the gusting wind. He must also prevent the sunlight from filtering through it and distorting his view of the developing picture. “I sometimes have to nail my canvas to a tree or anchor the easel with tent stakes and wires,” Doudera explained. There was only a slight wind blowing on the days of the outing, so a heavy rock placed in the metal tray of his French easel was enough to secure it.

The palette he used at Weir Farm included titanium white, viridian, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium red deep, cadmium red light, cadmium orange, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, raw sienna, and Naples yellow. It took Doudera several days to complete his large painting, but his considerable experience in working outdoors helped him adjust to the changing conditions.

When this happens before a grand jury?

Well, tomorrow brings a hideous spectacle of the Bush policy of accepting bribes called corrupt. I suppose the theory is to grasp it while you can never, never to return. It would be very curious to know if the commissioner Nancy Nord, said the value of your trip to Hilton Head corrupt Golf Resort. The law under which we live junior said that if it did not plan the next trip paid, we would take a federal detention center. Beyond So I think that both the offer and accept a bribe to an official and a federal crime. I guess I know why the Justice Department has had to rely on the cleaning station to make this little problem to light. On the other side at least now we know what the head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission was when hundreds of thousands of painted toys Lead has been offered for sale to children of America. Lead poisoning is incurable and debilitating for life. Nordie Great work!

She led the largest toy withdraw a known problem since 1994. Then he asked for more money for testing facilities and inspectors and said that more money can not if used for Lawers.

Revelations of a Professional Home Inspection

The professional way for defects in a home’s structure, systems, components, and even features is with a home inspection. These inspections are carried out by experts that are required to follow strict regulations and industry standards, provincially, nationally, and internationally. Inspectors are either certified or licensed and highly beneficial for buyers, sellers, real estate agents/brokers, and even banks and other lending institutions. The information identified reveals a realistic condition of the property.

Obviously, of all investments that people make, real estate is the biggest so having the home inspected by a professional is imperative. For people interested in buying a home, the inspection provides a sense of confidence, knowing their financial investment and safety would be protected. With this, potential buyers can decide what repairs they might be willing to make outside of what the loan requires.

Then for the seller, the inspection reveals things that need to be repaired prior to putting the home on the market, which means having the opportunity to make changes so the home is in the best possible condition to sell quickly and at the asking price. Additionally, sellers in a hurry to sell might choose to reveal defects to potential buyers, negotiating price, and closing based on how much they have time to do opposed to what buyers would be interested in taking on.

A good home inspection would involve very specific tasks for both buyer and seller, which includes the following:

* The inspection would reveal wood rot, termites, or other problems specific to wood. While a termite inspection would be focused on termites and damage only, the inspection would show termites, as well as wood rot, and even things such as a broken beam in the attic. * A home inspection would also look at chimneys to make sure smoke filters property, that no bricks or rock is crumbling, and that older chimneys do not have a flue liner.

* The electrical portion of the home inspection would determine the type and age of the electrical box, checking that it follows current city code. If a new electrical box is required, a licensed electrician could make suggestions as to brand and cost of replacement.

* The home’s furnace would also be inspected, which involves taking various components apart to look at the heat exchanger for cracks or malfunction. If a problem were identified, a licensed HVAC specialist would be able to provide details as to exact problem, components needing to be replaced, and any associated costs.

* If the home is older, the home inspection may also look for lead-based paint. If this were found, it would need to be removed by an abatement contractor, someone licensed and with experience removing dangerous chemicals. Lead paint is very dangerous and needs to be considered seriously.

* Another service provided by most home inspectors is to verify public records of the property, making comparisons so inaccuracies pertaining to square footage could be identified and then corrected. If the home inspection does not cover this service, an appraiser could assist or the calculations could be done by you.

* Even the type of foundation on which the home is built would be identified, raised or slab. If necessary, a foundation engineer could also be hired to determine any damage or defects such as sliding or cracking of the foundation.

* Another area that most inspectors cover is the roof, looking at the number of layers, year of the roof, and condition. This is actually a very important part of the home inspection not just from the roof perspective, but also because the structure of the room involves the chimney and plumbing. Typically, minor defects will appear on a roof between six and nine years of age although standard life of a quality roof is up to 30 years.

* The plumbing and water systems of the home would also be inspected. In this case, if problems were identified, a plumber would come in to look at the extent of the problem and if necessary, unclog or replace old pipes.

* Another important aspect of the home inspection is looking for the presence of mold, which contain airborne particulates that can be dangerous. Using special equipment, the air quality would be tested in and around the property.

Remember, these are just the primary services of a home inspector but a good inspection can reveal so much more. Whether you are the buyer or seller, it would be to your advantage to know current and potential risks rather than waiting shortly before buying or selling and only having the transaction delayed.

Do We Realize The Suffering Involved with the Products We Buy?

More than $2. 8 billion people in the world are working for less than $2 a day. Huge Corporations, giddy with joy over Free Trade Laws, are ever on the search for cheaper labor. Americans have fed this inequity by purchasing goods from countries where workers could be described as slave labor, even though we are sometimes faced with poisonous products, like lead paint in toys or tainted dog food.

Each day shiploads of foreign cargo reach our ports and no one seems to care that young children are employed in foreign factories, that women work in appalling conditions that no American would accept, that they labor for hours for salaries so low they are caught in poverty for their lifetimes.

Should Americans accept this? Should a mass boycott of foreign goods be used to halt these conditions? Should we insist that our politicians rework the Trade laws and, not only reinstate American manufacturing, but insist upon fair salaries and better working conditions in foreign lands?

Let me suggest that your train of thought was heading in the right direction, but then it crashed after derailing.
Yes there are countries all over the world that use slave labor tactics. No it isn’t the responsibility of American to fix it as far as putting money into the problem. Our responsibility is to get our elected officials to stop the wasteful spending habits that they have at all levels, so the companies will stay here in our country and not go to these other countries.
The actual American citizen has selfishly made this problem worse, and continues to allow our government to tax everyone and everything. Our greed as Americans lets a Union tell a business that it has to operate at a cost that will cripple the company. Aske the auto industry why they keep closing plants across the country.
Our individual greed, as well as our government taxes, and all of those sweet little special interest groups have brought this on.
The actual answer is to rebuild our government and retake our country. When that is done, we need to keep out of the afairs of the rest of the world and work on taking care of things here at home.
