Lead Paint Mattel Recall

would you say that this was a spiritual thing to do??

Mattel formally apologized to the people of China for damaging their country’s reputation in the wake of a series of Chinese-made toy recalls because of potentially harmful levels of lead paint.

maybe i just don’t understand this, but i would think that china should have apologised to us?

what do you think?
my concern is both spiritual and personal…i have grandkids.

shouldn’t china have to comply with whatever laws are in place in the country it wants to export to?

China is a totalitarian state. The head of Mattel understands that when your business, career and life is in the hands of those who are not vulnerable to law or any other force at your disposal, you do what they want.

In his apology the Mattel executive faulted their own business contracts etc. and perhaps justly so. After all, we know that Mattel is there having toys manufactured because of the low labor costs. It is very likely that they are pushing the chinese to make everything as cheaply and as prettily as possible with all other considerations secondary. Since it is unlikely that they emphasized the safety aspects, and the Chinese very likely have no such regulations, Mattel may very well bear a considerable portion of the responsibility.

Mattel Lead Paint Issues

Mattel Recall blown way out of proportion?

Lead paint is hazardous and can be fatal, we all know. However, how many people died or even suffered because of the toys? Some of these toys have been out for months and millions have bought them yet we do not hear of anyone dying from lead poisoning or from swallowing magnets. Regardless, the media makes it seem as if entire states have been wiped out because these toys. What is even more embarrassing is the flagrant slandering of Chinese manufacturing. I find this very convenient considering the big talk that China is poised to overthrow the US as the world’s most powerful economy. The issue is no longer that innocent children may die but that the Chinese are irresponsible and their products are sub-standard. This is a low blow coming from the US media and government.

I am not denying the hazard that these toys pose but the US media have cheaply piggy-backed on this issue and turned it into a huge propaganda against the Chinese.

http://consumerproductrecalls.blogspot.com/

From what I hear Mattel has lot of experience working in China and Mattel is one of the most aggressive testers of its toys in the industry. I think experts agree there are probably lot toys with lead out there and its hard to tell how harmful they are. But Mattel is the one doing testing more than others. So catching more defected toys. But if you don’t know which toy is tainted you’ll just never know what the effects are of those toys on kids. Because you just don’t know where these toys are and what happened to kids who played with them.

With Chinese Olympics game coming up in 2008. I think we’ll see lot more of these recalls and China stories.

How can Canadian consumers organize a class action suit against Mattel for the recall of their toys?

I for one do not accept Mattel Chairman’s for recalled toys. Lead paint has been banned in Canada for many years. According to Mattel’s annual report saftey is assured. I am appauled beyond belief at the severe repercussions Mattel’s lack of quality control has had on the lives of our precious children. I would ask all who read this to boycott Mattel for life. Anything short of this is absolving them from the total irresponsibility they have shown in their disregard for the safety of families who have bought their products for years. Quality control and safety testing should be their number one concern and they have failed miserably. I would welcome hearing from any Canadian lawyer who would be interested in providing free legal advice as to how to commence a class action suit against all those responsible. Before I return any toys for another manufactured by Mattel, I want to give a voice to the children who may have been affected by this travesity.

Safety Oriented Apparels For Kids

Three years ago, several toys of Mattel Inc., the makers of Barbie and Hotwheels, has been faced with thousands of complains after the authorities find out that their products from China has been made with so much lead contents. There used to be issues on toys and infant products that had been recalled by their respective companies out of defects and unsafe features or dysfunctional materials used. The recall has but several effects in the society and many of which proves to be detrimental and unacceptable.   Authorities said that amount of lead found on Mattel toys can lead to poisoning. For about a month, a leading baby carrier company has faced similar fate when mothers complained about the mechanical and design defects on their baby sling. According to reports, Infantino voluntarily recalled a million of the “SlingRider” and “Wendy Bellisimo” after reports have associated three infant deaths to these products. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission concurred to Infantino’s decision. Both of the companies stated above in one way or the other suffered financial damages due the product recalls.

Rather than sacrifice their credibility and capital to recalls. Not to mention the cost every recalling company would spend to rebuild or repair the dysfunctional products, the refund they have to give to the buyers, and the amount they have to award for settlement to those who had been affected. Because of these problems, countless of other companies that make various children products from toys, food, clothing, and accessories spearheaded a safety first features in their lines.

In the US, a company started a safety first campaign and included the features in their products. The company is a clothing and apparel manufacturer. Dorel Industries’ youth product division Dorel Juvenile Group Inc recently partnered with Kids With Character for a very distinct project – of making children safe apparels like sportswear uniforms.

“Under the partnership arrangement, Kids With Character, the anchor apparel licensee, will manufacture and market DJG USA’s successful, well known, and trusted Safety 1st brand on an assortment of apparel in infant, toddler and children’s sizes. Just as the Safety 1st brand personifies innovative technology to protect children, consumers can expect apparel with added safety features including UV protection, sun/temperature indicators and added durable comfort. This branded apparel program will run the gamut from everyday coordinates and basics to layette, playwear, outerwear, sleepwear and swimwear – a year-round assortment to outfit your child with the utmost confidence in any season,” a report from fibre2fashion.com reads.

Safety 1st line of apparel will become available in the market by 2011. As parents look for more reliable and safer children wears, DJGI and KWC just made an overwhelming step. The main objective of the partnership has been to give parents the peace of mind as their children are wearing just the safest apparels in the world in terms of materials used and in design.

“Safety 1st is one the most respected and trusted brands amongst consumers and retailers. Kids With Character’s passion and expertise enables us to deliver more than just another branded apparel line; we’re creating a new staple for parents,” Randi Goodman, Synergy Licensing Principal expressed in the same report.

Are we American consumers going to stand for the A** kissing Mattel has put on the Chinese?

Mattel apologizes to the Chinese for ruining their reputation? Excuse me! Who put the lead paint in the toys? If Mattel did, then they need to lose their license to manufacture and sell toys. If the Chinese did, and they did, then they need to step and accept the consequences. We Americans can forgive the use of lead paint better than we can A** kissing. Right? What say you America?

I was really appalled by that. Where was the apology for the American consumer? They’re so busy making their stuff cheap that they don’t even test it for safety?? No thanks.

Have you ever had to explain to a small child that you have to take their favorite toy away because it wasn’t made right?

Jerks.

How are the Chinese products are of poor quality and unreliable?

"On 2 August 2007, Mattel subsidiary Fisher-Price recalled about a million Chinese-made toys, including Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street, because the toys of the potential dangers of certain parts of toys that have been stained with particular emphasis on lead paint. "China is known for the manufacture of products with a higher rate of failure or defective products are cheap but quality is not reliable. Who is responsible for these problems? Is it because of his government (corruption, less regulation) or because the Chinese people in general, indifferent to moral and ethics? Do you think American society is also responsible for this problem? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6qNXjSkz3I

Everyone has guilt in this regard recalls. China has standards when it is the poor quality of products and reform is necessary, but U.S. companies are equally guilty of purchase of these standards toy. If they did not check before you buy plants then companies were idiots and if they do check and bought another toy to the rules that were unethical. Please do not stereotype an entire population as immoral because the forces of capitalism throughout the world to reduce costs, no matter what you finally do. If all the factories in China has raised its standards to U.S. levels, then why the U.S. buy companies in China at all when the inevitable price that arise? If you think, "are not immoral Chinese workers do not complain about the creation of defective products, think about how many millions of workers are not finding work and how an employer can fire forces work together easily and just as easily hire new workers.
