Socialized healthcare and intelligence?

Can anyone think of a direct relationship between a socialized healthcare system and education or intelligence? I have made the connection between lead screening for children (lead poisoning in children can lower intelligence, so proper screening can catch it early and allow for prevention/treatnment) that is available to everyone regardless of income. I am looking for more instances, such as average intelligence in countries with socialized healthcare vs. average intelligence in America, etc. Any ideas?
I think some of you are confused. I am not looking for opinions on whether socialized healthcare is right or wrong. I am also aware that is a far stretch between healthcare and intelligence but there are definite corellations. I am simply asking for more examples of a possible corellation.
Also, if anyone thinks we don’t already have limits to our quality of healthcare, you obviously are not underinsured or you don’t have an HMO.

well… a proper comparison would be…

average literacy rate in nations with socialized health care… vs. nations without socialized health care…

pretty sure the socialized would win…

A question about Michael Jackson.?

I believe he died from lead-poisoning.
In the middle-ages, women & men used lead-based make-up to lighten their skin.
The side effects included bone degeneration.
I think this is what he died from.
In answer to all your answers- i have Vitiligo myself over the whole of my body & BELIEVE ME it does not look like his. Most of you have been very rude to me.
Look up vitiligo on Wikipidia & you will see that this is NOT what MJ had.
ALL of you have insulted true vitiligo sufferers like myself & you should all be ashamed of your lack of education.
I can only assume that most of you are from America, where the education system is behind ours in the UK.
Many of you can barely spell correctly.

Its possible. Would would explain why his skin wasn’t blotchy like the other skin conditions would cause.

No. .. BB are made of steel with a coating of copper or zinc to prevent oxidation, not lead. Use a magnet on them to see for yourself. The only "head" of BB is likely to meet the rifles used in hunting. His illness is caused by something else.

Lead Poisoning For Children

lead poisoning for children
I’m worried about lead paint because I have 2 young children. How does a person fix lead paint?

I have lead paint in my apartment and I’m worried about my kids getting lead poisoning. I asked my landlord to fix it and she said she was going to paint over it. But I thought the only way to eliminate the danger was to remove it? If she just paints over it instead of removing it, can I decide to move out even if I have a lease. I was unaware of lead in the apartment when I moved in and was uneducated about the dangers. I’m not convinced painting over it will be an effective enough fix. I have an appt. to get my kids tested for lead next week. (They are 1 and 3 years old) Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance!

Do not try to remove it yourself.
Lead paint is harmless, unless it gets injested or inhaled. If the paint is starting to flake, and your children eat it, that could be dangerous (or if they are the type to lick everything, that is harmful too).
To be removed properly, it needs to be done by a professional (similar to asbestos removal). If you try to remove the lead paint, or have your landlord do it, chances are it will not be done correctly. Lead paint flakes and particles will end up in the air, on your floors, on your furniture, on your kids’ toys and clothes, and that is much, much worse than having paint on the walls.
You can:
1. Have the painted item replaced (if the paint is on something as simple as a door, but of course this won’t work if it’s the walls).
2. Cover the lead-based paint. You can spray the surface with a sealant or cover it with gypsum wallboard. This is not a long-term solution, however, your children will be safe(r) until the new paint begins to deteriorate. This method will not result in any lead dust.
3. Have the lead-based paint removed by professionals trained in removing lead-based paint. All types of dry paint-removal methods (sandpaper, scrapers, chemicals, sandblasters, and torches or heat guns) can produce lead fumes or dust. Fumes or dust can become airborne and be inhaled or ingested. Wet methods help reduce the amount of lead dust.
4. Reduce lead dust exposure. You can periodically wet mop and wipe surfaces and floors with a high phosphorous (at least 5%) cleaning solution. Wear waterproof gloves to prevent skin irritation. Avoid activities that will disturb or damage lead based paint and create dust. This is a preventive measure and is not an alternative to replacement or removal.

It poisons the environment. Birds and fish will eat it and get lead poisoning.

The lead used for sinkers/splitshots as well as the lead found in ammo and shotgun shells is the most inert lead you can get. It doesnt break down so it wont leach into the water supply/environment. Some states and even the national parks have banned the use of sinkers/splitshot under 1/2oz. They were unable to ban lead completely so they figured they`d go with the next best thing. The reasoning is that the smaller lead splitshots and ammo “could be eaten by water fowl, fish, and amphibians”

Why is China poisoning our children?

Chinese toy companies have recalled MILLIONS of lead contaminated toys. Obviously their is a profit reason, but do you think that their could be an ulterior motive? Lead poisoning causes behavior problems and in extreme cases, mental retardation. Could the Chinese be trying to sabotage our youth?

The question is why are you an ignorant?

On September 21, 2007, Mattel’s Executive Vice-President for worldwide operations, Thomas Debrowski, travelled to Beijing. In a meeting with China’s product safety chief, Li Chanjiang, Debrowski took full responsibility for the magnet recalls and said that, “vast majority of those products that were recalled were the result of a design flaw in Mattel’s design, not through a manufacturing flaw in China’s manufacturers.”

lead poisoning can cause
I have had a peice of lead in my finger for about 5 years. I need some information.?

I need to know when did they stop putting lead in normal yellow #2 pencils, and start putting graphite in, I have had this peice of lead stuck in me since I was 10 years old when it first happend and I actually stabbed my self I pulled the main part of lead out, but to this day I can still see a very faint touch of gray inside my skin, should I be worried could it even cause lead poisoning?

They have not used lead in pencils since the 1600s. It has been graphite the whole time since then. You should not be worried in the least. There is no possible way.. zero percent, that the pencil ‘lead’ you were stuck with had any lead in it at all.

“Some time before 1565 (some sources say as early as 1500), an enormous deposit of graphite was discovered on the approach to Grey Knotts from the hamlet of Seathwaite in Borrowdale parish, Cumbria, England.[1][2][3] The locals found that it was very useful for marking sheep. This particular deposit of graphite was extremely pure and solid, and it could easily be sawn into sticks. This remains the only large scale deposit of graphite ever found in this solid form.[4] Chemistry was in its infancy and the substance was thought to be a form of lead. Consequently, it was called plumbago (Latin for “lead ore”).[5][6] The black core of pencils is still referred to as lead, EVEN THOUGH IT NEVER CONTAINED THE ELEMENT LEAD.”

My Betta died yesterday ….?

I had my Betta for about 8-10 months and kept in a 3L round glass bowl. I did all the right things with water and allow water to support the evolution to the same temperature, as he was already in the water and conditioner, also not to eat etc etc. At first it was a happy fish go for food, then changed. Do not jump over and sat on the bottom of the container. I always ate well, there was only energy or happy. It was like this for about 6-8 weeks. I tried every remedy anti fungal and anti-bacterial, but I think that's what was wrong with him. I thought maybe he was getting old because I do not know how old he was when he got it. But someone said that maybe the glass bowl Glass is, in fact, and has led to leaching and what kill fish. So my questions are: What are the symptoms of lead poisoning, how I can tell if my glass bowl and if there is a glass have the advantage, or what are the symptoms of old age in a betta?

Why is the calcium salt of EDTA an effective detoxifying lead poisoning?

considering the formation constants (Kf) to KF (Ca ^ 2 – EDTA) = 5.0×10 ^ 10 KF (Pb ^ 2-EDTA) = 1.1×10 ^ 18

Ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid or EDTA chelation Methal, and binds heavy metals very well. It has a greater affinity for lead than for Ca, making it an effective detoxifier for lead poisoning. The main reason salt is used (and is often sodium salt) is to make more soluble in EDTA.

The poisons from your PC

You can feel healthy …. but you're sitting in front of a large toxic time bomb in the calculation.

Your computer contains many toxic chemicals in the soil, and accumulate in a location near you!

The manufacturers have stamped the toxins inside, but the disposal of computers outdated in recent years, and crushed in landfills, allowing the escape of dangerous substances into the surrounding land, air and water.

In the U.S., according to the Security Council, 60 million PCs and are buried in landfills and 138,000 computers become obsolete every day – and therefore ready to practice dumping – between 2004 and 2009.

In the United Kingdom, up to 2 million Pentium PCs are dumped each year.

In addition, a disaster may release large amounts of toxic materials. (An estimate of the 9 / 11 was that contained personal computers destroyed 200,000 pounds of lead!)

How escaped into the outside world? Judging by the reading place in the following weeks, a lot.

A computer is off the manufacturing environment. Used 10 times its weight in fossil fuels over a ton of purified water. pollutants (low) are also rejected in the streams and lakes in the air during each stage of manufacture.

However, fierce competition, higher repair costs and more, and the modernization of the leading manufacturers ordinary have made little effort to recycle, as the prices of PC profit margins – and therefore – have been kept low.

If these are poisons its average model? The main ones are:

LEAD

Consumer electronics is 40% lead continually dumped (until recently) in landfills and junkyards. An average computer uses 4 pounds of lead, 6.2% of the total weight of the PC.

The main uses of lead in electronic products welding consumables for printed circuit boards (PCBs) and other electronic components and glass panels in computer monitors (CRT) to protect against radiation. Usually, a monitor can contain 2-5 grams!

Lead is one of the few natural substances that are not essential for life. In the very same levels low, lead has been shown to cause health problems.

Lead can damage the central and peripheral nervous system, blood system and kidneys in humans. It accumulates in the environment and has serious detrimental effects on plants, animals and microorganisms. The problem with lead is that once land is taken, no is commercially acceptable to destroy or disable – you can try recycling, recyclable efficiency lead to a low of around 5%.

CADMIUM

The Cadmium occurs in certain electronic components such as resistors, infrared detectors, semiconductors, older cathode ray tubes, batteries and a plastic stabilizer. The Cadmium is extremely toxic metal, and can harm human health in an irreversible manner.
Cadmium and its compounds are concentrated in the body humans, especially in the kidneys.

Cadmium is absorbed mainly by inhalation – very dangerous (high levels can kill you), but also enters food, and you may easily accumulate in amounts that cause symptoms of poisoning.

Even as lead, cadmium accumulated by the dumping of old computers, and has become a danger to us all.

BARIUM

Barium is used in front of a CRT to protect users from radiation. barium can be released into the air, water and soil and accumulates in fish. Studies have shown that short-term exposure to barium (ingestion) resulted to brain swelling, muscle weakness and damage to the heart, liver and spleen.

MERCURY

22% of annual global consumption of mercury is used in electrical and electronic equipment. On the PC, is the mercury in the PLP, new batteries and LCD flat screen LCD, replacing the larger and more with their trunks (eg screens contain lead!)

Mercury is a powerful poison. Published research has shown that mercury, even in small quantities, is more toxic than lead, cadmium and arsenic, even! Although mercury is 0.0022% of the total weight of equipment is a major health hazard.

And we have not even touched on other hazardous substances and pollutants such as tin, arsenic, beryllium, hexavalent chromium, selenium, arsenic, manganese, silver. More stabilizers and additives.

polybrominated flame retardants used cables and circuits can damage the sexual development and growth, and accumulate in breast milk

If the hardware is "destroyed" by commercial incineration, hazardous metals and organic carcinogens such as dioxins can be released into the air.

Stricter laws put on the worldwide control over the disposal and recycling of computers, although this dumping computer waste from the West on developing countries has become a major scandal. We make healthy people sick Foreign dismantling of our PC.

The main objective behind the removal of laws in the PC world has been "Making the polluter pay", manufacturers are required to pay the direct costs.

(But do not be surprised to find his new team, while a shot costs $ 60 more!)

The European Union has opened the way for a series of guidelines sets strict limits on the content of a dangerous PCs sold in member countries, and how all the teams are eliminated – the vendors should initiate and organize recycling.

The United States thus far adopted a more piecemeal approach, while states as far away as California and Alaska are the implementation of controls severe on the dumping and disposal of electronic equipment.

What can you do?

  • Check if you want to get rid local of their computers.

  • Give your computer away to a registered charity or an organization that can use it. (Be sure that is working properly before trying!)

  • Use a specialist of the company has to remove and recycle old computers, do not violate the law and pollute the environment!

  • In the future, before buying a new PC, consider buying a recycled computer, or upgrade your old.

issues of liability and lead poisoning, etc?

I have any questions about lead. Why is the EPA benchmarks if not applied federal? Who is responsible for the contamination or cleanup of lead? How can test their toxin is from a safe place?

Levels EPA's lead paint, air, workplace, and water are all federal taxes applied, but within the limits of regulation. Regulation air and water are strictly enforced by level. If you are the person or group may be fined or imprisoned. Lead paint and labor regulations are based on risk and that this situation are not "dangerous." There is no regulation that all the paint on the walls in all buildings tested. It's a waste of money. Regulations concern the presence of children and the presence of renovation / demolition where dust is created. These where people are exposed. The regulations are far from perfect and many local agencies do a bad job, but people go to jail for violating Regulation (breaking the law). The only place in this land of liberty laws can not get is that if you expose yourself. For example, if I scrape the wall of his house, the paint must be tested for the first time., You can discard the wall all you want. To find the source is the work of a licensed risk assessor. It is usually obvious, but sometimes a little work is required CSI. Painting a child is exposed to is easy, but the advantage can be found in sweets imported (although supposedly it is stopped), new ceramics, swings, Grandma, etc. If you find multiple sources, to fix them, I do not care what it is.

Safety Oriented Apparels For Kids

Three years ago, several toys of Mattel Inc., the makers of Barbie and Hotwheels, has been faced with thousands of complains after the authorities find out that their products from China has been made with so much lead contents. There used to be issues on toys and infant products that had been recalled by their respective companies out of defects and unsafe features or dysfunctional materials used. The recall has but several effects in the society and many of which proves to be detrimental and unacceptable.   Authorities said that amount of lead found on Mattel toys can lead to poisoning. For about a month, a leading baby carrier company has faced similar fate when mothers complained about the mechanical and design defects on their baby sling. According to reports, Infantino voluntarily recalled a million of the “SlingRider” and “Wendy Bellisimo” after reports have associated three infant deaths to these products. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission concurred to Infantino’s decision. Both of the companies stated above in one way or the other suffered financial damages due the product recalls.

Rather than sacrifice their credibility and capital to recalls. Not to mention the cost every recalling company would spend to rebuild or repair the dysfunctional products, the refund they have to give to the buyers, and the amount they have to award for settlement to those who had been affected. Because of these problems, countless of other companies that make various children products from toys, food, clothing, and accessories spearheaded a safety first features in their lines.

In the US, a company started a safety first campaign and included the features in their products. The company is a clothing and apparel manufacturer. Dorel Industries’ youth product division Dorel Juvenile Group Inc recently partnered with Kids With Character for a very distinct project – of making children safe apparels like sportswear uniforms.

“Under the partnership arrangement, Kids With Character, the anchor apparel licensee, will manufacture and market DJG USA’s successful, well known, and trusted Safety 1st brand on an assortment of apparel in infant, toddler and children’s sizes. Just as the Safety 1st brand personifies innovative technology to protect children, consumers can expect apparel with added safety features including UV protection, sun/temperature indicators and added durable comfort. This branded apparel program will run the gamut from everyday coordinates and basics to layette, playwear, outerwear, sleepwear and swimwear – a year-round assortment to outfit your child with the utmost confidence in any season,” a report from fibre2fashion.com reads.

“Safety 1st is one the most respected and trusted brands amongst consumers and retailers. Kids With Character’s passion and expertise enables us to deliver more than just another branded apparel line; we’re creating a new staple for parents,” Randi Goodman, Synergy Licensing Principal expressed in the same report.

Food Poisoning–An Overview

What is Food Poisoning?

Food poisoning results when you eat food contaminated with bacteria or other pathogens such as parasites or viruses. Your symptoms may range from upset stomach to diarrhea, fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps and dehydration. Most such infections go undiagnosed and unreported.

But the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year about 76 million people in the United States become ill from pathogens in food, and about 5,000 of them die.

Over 55% of such cases are caused by improper cooking and storage of foods, and 24% by poor hygiene, such as not washing your hands while preparing food. Only 3% of cases are from unsafe food sources. Keeping your hands clean while working with food is the single most important thing you can do to prevent food poisoning.

About 20 organisms can cause food poisoning. After you eat food contaminated with bacteria, they will multiply in your stomach and bowels. Some bacteria give off a toxin when they multiply. As a result, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea occur. Vomiting and diarrhea are the body’s way of eliminating the toxin, and most cases of food poisoning run their course without needing medical attention.

Not all invasive organisms cause vomiting as a symptom, but almost all of them cause diarrhea. Blood in your stool occurs in many types of food poisoning and is considered to be serious. Abdominal cramps are also common, and sometimes you will have a fever. Be sure to contact a physician if a fever or bloody stools are present.

Common Sources of Food Poisoning

Campylobacter is the leading cause of bacterial food poisoning in the USA. It causes several million cases a year, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Eating undercooked chicken or food that has been in contact with raw chicken most commonly causes campylobacter. The Center for Disease Control estimates that up to 70%-90% of chickens are infected with campylobacter.

To prevent the disease, cook chicken thoroughly, with no pink remaining. Wash your hands frequently when handling raw chicken. Use paper towels to dry your hands. If you are using a sponge or dish-cloth to clean the counters, use a fresh one after working with raw chicken. Wash your cutting board with a diluted bleach solution before using again. And any utensils or dishes having contact with raw chicken need to be washed and rinsed with soap and water before using again.

E. coli 0157: H7 infection causes an estimated 25,000 cases of food poisoning each year in the USA. Most of these result from undercooked, contaminated ground beef. The organism lives in the intestines of healthy cows. Meat can become contaminated during slaughter when intestinal fecal matter is mixed with beef that is ground into hamburger. Contaminated meat looks and smells normal, so it is not readily detectable. Bacteria on cow udders or milking machines can also contaminate raw milk.

To prevent this form of food poisoning, cook all ground beef until no pink is showing. Make sure all of the meat juices are clear, not pink or red, and that the inside of the meat is hot. If you are served an undercooked hamburger in a restaurant, send it back. Consume only pasteurized milk products, and drink only water treated with chlorine or other disinfectants.

Botulism is caused by clostridium botulinum, a spore-forming bacteria. This form of food poisoning is very rare, but can be life-threatening. It may result from eating improperly processed, low-acid foods such as green beans, mushrooms, spinach, olives and beef or fish. Improper home canning methods often account for botulism cases. Improperly processed commercial products can also cause this serious disorder.

To avoid botulism, don’t even taste canned food that is soft, deteriorating, fermenting or doesn’t smell right. It isn’t worth a life-threatening illness. When in doubt, throw it out.

Infant botulism is more common in spring and summer, and is rare in winter. Infants younger than one year of age are at the highest risk. Symptoms include muscle weakness, a weak cry, difficulty in feeding, constipation, head lag, increased heart rate and a decreased gag reflex. A baby with botulism is described as a “floppy baby,” as the infant will have weak muscles, especially in the arms, legs and neck.

Infant botulism has been associated with eating honey. The Center for Disease Control suggests that honey should not be given to infants under six months old, and the Honey Industry Council extends the safety limit to one year. Honey is not an essential food for infants, and should never be given to them.

Summary of Food Poisoning

Most symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea are due to viral infections and are not true cases of food poisoning. An accurate diagnosis can be difficult because the pathogenic organisms are found in different kinds of food and have varying incubation periods. Also, eating a substance and getting sick immediately afterwards is not the typical course for food poisoning. Most people are not aware that food eaten several days previously can be the cause of food poisoning. Always be sure to consult a physician when experiencing severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

Lead Poisoning In Toys

Sources of Lead

A special focus on toys imported from China…

Over last few decades, lead poisoning has emerged as one of the major threats to environment and human health. There are many ways in which humans are exposed to lead: through deteriorating paint, household dust, bare soil, air, drinking water, food, ceramics, home remedies, hair dyes and other cosmetics. Much of this lead is of microscopic size, invisible to the naked eye. More often than not, children with elevated blood lead levels are exposed to lead in their own home. The major sources of lead poisoning are:

Drinking Water: More often, lead in drinking water comes from the water supply lines or a building’s own plumbing rather than from the water system resources. Plumbing materials containing lead may corrode and release lead over a period of time when they are in contact with water. Its quite likely for lead to be present in following cases:

If water supply pipes contains lead

If fixtures or fittings are made up of brass, bronze or other alloys

If lead solder was used on the pipes

If water is acidic in nature due to impurities.

Lead-contaminated drinking water is most often a problem in buildings that are either very old or very new. Older buildings have higher levels of lead in plumbing materials whereas newer systems leach lead more rapidly than old ones because fittings are in direct contact with the water.

Food: Lead in food usually comes from the container but it may come from water used to prepare the food or food that has been contaminated with lead dirt or dust and not washed. Lead cannot be seen on food. Containers with lead are usually pottery and ceramics with a lead glaze and lead crystal decanters or containers.

Residential Paint and Soil: Deteriorating lead-based paint, lead contaminated dust, and lead contaminated residential soils are some of the common sources of lead contamination and lead poisoning.

People living near areas where lead is processed and worked upon, can ingest lead through dust on their hands. Those living near highways are exposed to lead through automobile and truck exhaust. Even those in urban areas are not exempted! They are frequently exposed to lead paints, vessels and other leaded items.

Children under six are especially sensitive to lead poisoning because they play in lead-contaminated dirt or house dust then swallow the lead from dirty hands and faces with their food. Some children deliberately eat paint or dirt because they like the taste -a habit called pica.

Lead in Paint: Some products imported from China have been reported to have exceedingly high lead content. They mainly include children’s toys, kid’s metal jewelry etc. About 103,000 multicolored necklaces, bracelets, earrings and charms imported by Tween Brands Inc. of New Albany, Ohio, were reported to be affected.

Not just jewelry, toy drums coated with red paint were found to contain excessive levels of lead. About 4,500 of the Eli’s Small Drums and Liberty’s Large Drums were recalled. They were earlier sold in gift and collectible stores nationwide.
