Lead Paint Test

Where in the UK can I get a kit to test for Lead Paint?

I just bought a Victorian house and I’m about to start decorating. I’m worried that stripping the many layers of paint from the door and window frames is going to expose old lead paint which will slowly poison us. I’ve got a 9 month old son, who will no doubt gobble up any tasty paint chips that fall his way.

I’d like to buy a testing kit, but no-one seems to stock them.

Anyone spotted a stockist, particularly in the London area? Or can anyone suggest a way to identify lead paint, other than to lick it and see how I feel?

B & Q stock kits, and you can also purchase directly from some paint manufacturers, including Kalon.

You can also get laboratory testing done for a completely accurate reading. Full details available from UKAS Telephone: 0208 917 8555, website www.ukas.org

lead paint toys dangers
All this hype and horror on poisonous lead-filled toys ?

I am in my 40s and now hate to imagine how much deadly paint and poison we ingested as children! ? I realize this is a true danger but some of these items weren’t meant to be put in the mouth to begin with, then people go crazy when a child gets ill or chokes on the tiny item, not meant for the mouth. I had even bought aqua dots for my niece for Christmas, they went back after the federal government recalled and stopped their sale. Anyway, if you were born before 1970 doesn’t it make you wonder how much “poison” we played with?

I wonder the same thing when I hear about the toy recalls. I do know that I did not ingest any paint as a child, I did however paint myself from head to toe with green house paint, at the age of 3 or 4, probably lead based paint back then. in my parents defence my sister was babysitting at the time. How did any of us survive???

Is a home lead test kit good enough for rental property proof?

We are having renters move in very soon. We do not suspect lead paint in the house, but we need proof. Are the hardware store kits good enough to prove there is no lead paint???
Property is located in MA.
House is built before 1978.

If there is a Federal Law pertaining to lead paint testing, I would love to see it. I have been a landlord for 13 yrs and a member of the landlords association here in MI. The association knows and is updated on all the state and federal laws pertaining to being a landlord. Nowhere does it say that you have to have a house tested for lead paint if built before 1978. The only requirement is a form that gets signed between landlord and tenant stating the landlord has or has not any knowledge of lead paint in the house and that the tenant was warned due to the age of the house, that there is a possibility of old lead paint. The tenant signs the same paper acknowledging they were told of the possibility..
If your state or city requires proof, a hardware kit should be sufficient. But you can simply call your building code dept and ask them if its ok.

Lead poisoning?

I just bought a lead testing kit from Lowes and found a couple of spots in my home that are positive for lead paint we live in an older house we’ve been renting for about 9 months now and my youngest is 8 months she’s been living there her whole life. I’m starting to worry about both of my children (oldest is 3). If anyone has had any experiences with lead poisoning or know any information please let me know. Thank you very much.

I went through the same thing, except our daughter was two when we found out. My wife and daughter moved out, I hired a team to come in and help me sand paint down. Still lead in places. In the end, I decided to repaint all surfaces. That worked, and unless my daughter started peeling the new paint and eating what was underneath (it never happened), I figured we were alright. Yet when I took her to the doctor to test her lead levels, they were elevated (9 parts). We did research, discovered that apple pectin helps bond to lead internally and detox. I figured there must be some dust left (from my stupid sanding effort), did another massive cleaning (wet rags, even on the ceiling), and within six weeks my daughter’s lead levels were back to normal.

There is no doubt that the effects are lead are really scary. Just get the kids tested and then address it at a macro/micro level.

How Your Home is Killing You

Carbon monoxide is a well-known household threat, as are lead paint and toxic household cleaners. But one lesser known killer can cause the deaths of over a hundred times more people than carbon monoxide poisoning can. This toxin is present in varying degrees in homes all across America, and can quietly slip through the cracks in your foundation and into your basement. Like most artful poisons, it has no odor, taste, or color, and causes no noticeable symptoms until it’s too late. You can get lung cancer from it at a rate that is second only to cigarette smoking. There are estimates that approximately 20,000 people die annually from this unknown threat, and what’s worse is the fact that it comes from a naturally occurring event that can’t be stopped. All homeowners can do is try to prevent and/or slow down its progress before it claims any more lives.

This harbinger of death is called radon. It is a radioactive gas that is created by the decay of uranium that exists in the ground below us. Soil, water, and rock formations are all sources of radon. It seeps quietly into your home, usually through cracks in the foundation, and if the area is not properly ventilated, the gas gets trapped indoors.

Radon becomes deadly when it is breathed in. Particles of the gas can attach to the inner lining of your lungs, slowly damaging the tissue, leading to cancerous tumors. If you are a smoker, your risk of getting lung cancer is increased ten-fold, as cigarettes themselves already contain Polonium-210, another source of cancer-causing radiation.

Because radon is naturally occurring, there is not much that one can do to stop it. However, there are steps that homeowners can take to prevent the gas from entering their homes.

Your first and best defense against radon poisoning is to test your home for its presence. While most of us have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in our homes, a large segment of the population has never heard of radon, or know the threat that it can pose. Homeowners can purchase a home testing kit that they can use themselves, or they can hire a qualified radon tester in their local area.

There are two types of tests for radon: short term and long term. Short term tests are performed from as little as two days, up to a few months, depending on the type used. These testing kits can give fast, accurate results. Short term tests are especially useful during the sale of a home, when time is short and a buyer needs to know that the property is safe.

Long term tests, as their name implies, take longer, but provide a better overall picture of your home’s radon level. This is because radon levels can shift from day to day, and can greatly increase during periods of renovation. To learn the average levels over the course of a year, it is best to use a long term testing kit. Long term tests used in conjunction with short term tests can also be useful when selling your home, as you can easily reassure the potential buyer that your home is safe now, and poses little risk during the course of the year.

If you discover that radon levels are high, seal all cracks in the foundation immediately. This will prevent some of the radon from getting into your home. Don’t allow yourself to have a false sense of security by simply sealing the openings; you should also install a vent pipe and fan, which are referred to as “sub-slab depressurization systems.” These will help to prevent further radon from coming into your home, as well as disperse existing radon gas outdoors. Other methods such as soil suction can be effective as well, but be sure to hire a contractor who is licensed to install radon systems. The contractor will be able to test your home for gas levels, and be able to determine the best course of action, depending on your home’s structure.

Test for radon annually or every two years to ensure the safety of your home, and remember that while your home is your haven from the rest of the world, it is not always safe.

china lead poisoning toys
Anyone know of SPECIFIC toys that ARE NOT made in China?

I went shopping about a month ago for toys not thinking to look to see where they are made. I have to return 90% of them due to being made in China. They’re some fun toys too, but I’m just not taking the risk of lead poisoning. I know that Hasbro and Milton Bradley are made here in the USA and whomever makes those barrel of monkeys things that link together. Anyone have any other SPECIFIC ideas for a two year old girl?

I’ve been googling this subject for a couple of months, and have compiled all my results on my website, www.toysmadeinamerica.com. It includes over 100 clickable links to some great companies and products, lots of natural products, etc. I update it on a regular basis as I become aware of more companies to add. Thanks! Teresa
