Should i write an article on recalled toys for my newspaper article?

I need to write an article and I am not sure what i want to do it on, I was thinking that i should do my article on recalled toys with lead paint violations, but I am not sure any suggestions that I could use?

If you are writing for a high school paper, it might not be the best idea. Your audience members (high school students) probably don’t play with toys.

Try searching Google News or USA Today for new ideas. You might try the oil spill (especially if you live on the southern coast), midterm elections (high schoolers can vote), and summer plans.

Why not point out that Yahoo Mattel apologized to China?

It was a big deal, when Mattel and the United States condemns China for all defects, recalls, defective toys, etc., when Mattel said. But today, Mattel introduced a formal apology for falsely accusing China of misconduct. that is, There was a very small amount of lead paint toys (which is legal in China) has been found, and all other problems are design flaws MATTEL! Where are the headlines condemning Mattel, to match those who condemned China for the first time? The reality is that Mattel makes big profits from the manufacture in China and most of us can not afford to buy toys for our children if they were not there.

I am not sorry at all for Mattel. Too many products made overseas because of cheap labor.

Worried about lead paint in toys?

I never thought of before, but when I had my son, I signed CSPC remember, and I'm surprised how many toys are recalled for lead paint. I'm seriously considering buying my son unpainted wooden toys, or at least only buy things from a business in confidence, though more expensive. What are your thoughts and feelings on the issue of lead paint? http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09136.html

A new law should come into force shortly. Only toys that have been tested for lead can be sold, they are free of lead, of course. It was in the news because lead testing can be expensive and there are still some toy stores mom and dad a hand there, and will not be able to finance the $ for tests of each toy, and not mass produced. This is good news in the future, for now, just do our research.

What if your children have played with lead painted toys?

There was a recall of some toys, because my children were playing with paint to lead, what should I do with my KDS? I have to take them to the doctor?

Do not panic. We have lived for hundreds of years lead in every painted surface came into contact. Lead is only dangerous if ingested quantities large same for a long time. Caused brain damage in children who left alone to chew on painted surfaces for most of his early years. I personally do not know anyone who was so touched, but were surrounded by surfaces coated with lead paint in children. Of course, not allowed to chew the windows for years either. You have nothing to fear. .

And as technology advances, some issues are rectified as cheaper and more useful alternative solutions found.

The worst thing is the frequency with things that were once considered safe and useful, such as asbestos and lead based paints were found to be toxic. Even things used to taste food, MSG that fell out of favor with the public. Phthalates have been one of the most recent to fear in the long list of concerns about the toxicity of everyday consumer products. And while XRF testing has proved useful and practical for the determination of lead has been shown not to be so useful for determining phthalates.

Phthalates are common ingredients in many things today. Called a plasticizer, increases flexibility plastics. It is used in coating tablet and as a cost to the pharmaceutical industry. Can be used as glue and paint. Part of nail polish, building materials, detergent for clothes, lotions, baby powders, shampoos paste, paint pigments and food, even.

Phthalates have been particularly popular in the use of children's toys and other related products. From helping to make plastics softer and softer but still strong, is ideal for related items with younger children. Phthalates are used in things designed to help children sleep, quickly and easily. They help feed help children and help with teething. Also commonly found in bibs and pacifiers.

While the test is very popular for the XRF determination of other Contaminants found in children's toys and products, the complexity of phthalates, it is difficult to isolate and identify completely. modern means of analysis is possible for the analysis of foodstuffs, consumer goods, water and soil. Although testing of phthalates, on average, produce a large number of counterfeit goods Multiple tests will help to reduce exclusion and inference commonly toxins.

Evidence of phthalates is made on the strict guidelines set in detail and Consumer Products Act information security. Although this is a growing concern, little evidence has conclusively demonstrated that phthalates are toxic to children in development. For these reasons, their use in most products are being phased out. It really is more of a precaution in If most dangerous tests determined later.

It's good to be aware of this problem and be informed. Although it is preferable not to surround your child with products that contain phthalates, which are not really in immediate danger. But as always, with security in general, feel prevails.

Mattel Lead Paint Recall List

24 Apr

Has anyone heard about the Fisher Price/Mattel toys lead paint recall? Do they or will they test older toys?

My kids have at least two of the toys on the list, but they were sold a year to 6months before the recall. Almost every plastic toy we have is made by a Mattel company and made in China!!!! This worries me because they do have some lead in their blood.
It is really scary, especially when you look at your children’s toys and they are made in China and a Mattel brand. I don’t know if you can use the lead test sold at the hardware store to check toys for lead paint, but it may be worth a try.
I agree with bufalvo, but it’s going to be hard because every plastic toy in the house has been made in China!!!
I just read on the Oregon state website that you can test toys with standard lead test!!! Good Luck!

China Reassures Foreign Media Toy Quality With Factory Tour

Amid agonies by a string of safety issues with its exported products and food, China opened on Tuesday a toy testing lab and three toy factories to a group of domestic and foreign reporters to put off the concerns.

The Jetta (China) Industry Co. Ltd, the largest toy manufacturer the media group visited in the one-day tour with more than 10,000 employees, showed to reporters how it tested toys.

“A doll is normally tested for 10,000 times whether it can smile and cry as designed, and we have an employee specially in charge of testing this function,” introduced a staff member from Jetta.

Details like the doll’s laughing and crying time were recorded each time it was tested. Other than that, the company also perfected its quality control system with the tests on raw materials, examination of designs and monitoring of the production process.

Jetta exported 3,232 batches of toys worth more than 42 million U.S. dollars in the first seven months of this year mainly to the United States and European Union, with 70 percent flowing to the former.

All located in south China’s Guangdong Province, which produces 70 percent of China’s exported toys, Jetta and the other two toy factories seemed to have impressed the reporters in a positive way.

“The tour really offered us a good opportunity. The factories we visited today were very strict with the quality of their products and the toys were good,” said Jumpei Yoshioka, a reporter from Japan’s NHK TV station.

First time in such a trip in China, Yoshioka hoped that he could go to more factories to get a deeper and wider knowledge of the country’s toy-making industry, which was just lashed by a toy recall crisis.

“I want to find out whether other factories have quality problems or are as good as these ones,” he said.

In July, U.S. RC2 Corp. and Consumer Product Safety Commission filed a recall case involving toy trains made by a Guangdong-based company which used paint containing lead poisonous to children.

On Aug. 2, another U.S. toy company, Fisher-Price, also recalled more than one million character toys with unqualified paint. The producer’s paint provider made the paint with fake materials.

Some small factories do have quality problems, often caused by incaution when buying raw materials like paint, fill-in cotton and leather, said Wang Xin, an official with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) who accompanied the media group.

“We will tighten supervision over these factories and punish those discredited ones heavily,” Wang said.

But mostly, the problems are caused by foreign brand owners’ improper designs or inconsistent testing standards among different countries, he noted, adding that importers should share the responsibilities in case of false designing.

TS Wong, board chairman of Jetta, pointed out that the recall issues were just individual cases about individual companies.

China’s whole toy industry is healthy and quality-guaranteed, and our exports won’t be affected, except that the recall cases will prompt us to further improve the quality control system, Wong said.

Cen Jianming, a staff member from Jetta, told the reporters that the factory had a sophisticated screening process to ensure the safety of its raw materials.

“After the paint is bought, it will be isolated in a special room and spot checked with the standards of importing countries. If it’s unqualified, we will return the whole batch to the supplier,” Cen said.

With a variety of products from motor-driven toys to fluffy dolls, Jetta has an entire professional team checking hidden defects.

“As what we have seen from the three factories, Chinese enterprises do care about their product qualities and have strict quality control systems,” said Pascal Golomer, chief reporter from France2 TV station.

The media tour, co-organized by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and State Council Information Office, was the third of its kind in the past three months after China was besieged by frequent product safety scares.

The scares ranged from pet food to drugs, toothpastes, aquatic products, toys and tyres.

The Chinese government has taken a series of measures to improve product quality, including landmark recall systems for unsafe food products and toys and a four-month nationwide campaign to improve product quality initiated late in August. (Hao Yalin also contributed to this story)

Who else is boycotting toys made in China???

These toy companies don’t care about our families, that’s the bottom line. They don’t care about our children’s health and safety (obviously China doesn’t)! and they don’t care about contributing to our economy. Families that aren’t working can’t buy toys, and American-made toys would be made under strict controls to meet those standards.
How long has the lead paint issue been going on for? Years, maybe? It seems only since the pet food recalls that more imports have been subject to stricter testing, so I can’t imagine how many defective “made in China” things we all own….
** ALSO I went to a birthday party last month where the father told us NOT to bring a gift made from China. They preferred nothing over a cheap Chinese toy. Can’t blame them!! I bought his daughter a Crayola Color Wonder Kit (made in the US).
People are taking action!

like everything in china, out of every 3 certified quality controlled items, 2 will be defective or just cheaply made if not fake. the problem is that, for financial purposes, many big companies prefer using the cheap chinese labour system….. if you look closely in your house you might find MANY many chinese made items, from the kitchen ustensils to bathroom stuff via the bedroom accesories. you might have forgot but big brand like SONY, NIKE and even APPLE usually have a “made in china” mark. ….. if ever there needs to be a change, then it should be in the mind of people that believe “cheaper at all cost” Mattel is the tip of the iceberg….. remember that there are CARS made in china that are flooding the market, imagine that!

(living in China)… lead tainted toys?

http://www.miamiherald.com/business/story/1396671.html

not too long ago there was widespread recall of Chinese toys…
because the ppm of lead in paints exceeded the permissible limits…
now we hear yet another seizure of Chinese toys…
for the same reason…

why is that no corrective measures have been taken?…
or are they lacking appropriate “quality control?”…
is there something that can be done on this front?…

China is clearly lacking in its commitment to be quality conscious and all they care is cheap profit with no regard for the health of the users of those products. Its time all countries took a united stand in boycotting shoddy products from China.
